Why Are
We Here
The President of South Africa has proclaimed the Protection of Personal Information Act (PoPIA or PoPI Act) commencement date to be 1 July 2020. With the exception of section 110 and 114(4), all other sections of the Act are now effective. The Information Regulator, Advocate Pansy Tlakula, has allowed a grace period of 12 months for organisations to comply with the Act. This means that you have until 30 June 2021 to attain the required level of compliance.
The best way to reach the required level of compliance is to partner with someone who understands the Act, has extensive experience in running Information Privacy Programmes and can tailor a solution that will suit your business and your budget.
POPI Readiness
Assessment
Are you curious as to what your organisation’s current PoPI landscape looks like?
Bizmod has developed a PoPI Readiness Assessment which may assist an organisation in measuring how ready they are for 1 July 2021.

Why Privacy?
Why Privacy, and when does your privacy journey end? It depends on where your Customer Trust Journey ends. Privacy is intertwined with and supports your ongoing customer engagement. It’s an excellent discipline that supports and enhances processes, information security and compliance growth.
Cost no longer sets your business apart, especially with the increased options in different industries. The true differentiator is the quality of your customer relationships, and the absence of privacy controls will disable any customer retention and acquisition strategy.
Why is it
Important?
TRUST
People entrust your organisation with their Personal Information when they want or need to make use of your products or services. In order to maintain this trust, it is important that you do everything reasonably possible to comply with the PoPI Act. Complying with the PoPI Act means that you process Personal Information in a responsible and secure manner to maintain the integrity of the Personal Information. This will give your client peace of mind, help you gain their trust and, quite possibly, their long term business, setting you apart from your competitors.
DATA AND INFORMATION SECURITY RISKS
The Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC) 2015 Information Security Breach Survey provides the following statistics regarding Data and Information Security Risks:
• 90% of large organisations reported suffering a security breach in 2015.
• 59% of employees steal proprietary corporate data when they quit or are fired.
• Apart from this, though, there are more types of insider threats to get protection against (malicious insiders, exploited insiders, careless insiders).
• 68% of funds lost as a result of cyber-attack were declared unrecoverable.
LAW
We cannot disregard the fact that it is a legal requirement to comply with the PoPI Act, and non-compliance may result in severe penalties. Thankfully there is still some time because of the 12-month window which allows us until 30 June 2021 to become compliant.
